I created this site as a premium resource for smart hacks, and a rendezvous point for solopreneurs.
I have personally had to go through lots of different sites to learn what I needed to grow my business. It struck me that solopreneurs would love to have the one premium “go-to” place where everything they needed was available … help, ideas, resources, community … that saves countless hours of online searching.
Solopreneurs also need hacks that work. They have neither the time nor bandwidth for trial-and-error. They need results with speed and ease. This is whole “why” behind this site.
Back in 2019, when Elaine Pofeldt wrote that there were at least 41.8 million solopreneurs in the online world, people were still asking who a solopreneur was.
After the coronavirus and economic downturn, almost everyone is a solopreneur – they either love the idea and get into solopreneurship, or circumstances have forced them to consider the option, and they’ve grown to warm up to the lifestyle.
In fact, I can’t throw a brick and find a classic 9-5 office-going jobber these days. Even those in 9-5 jobs are enjoying life-like “almost solopreneurs”. They work in pajamas off the dining table, just stopping to wear a coat and scarf over the nightwear for Zoom meetings.
Where have I been before?
On this planet, I live in Chennai, India. I have been in digital marketing for over 40+ years. I have worked with over 125 client brands on the extreme cutting-edge of digital technology.
In the first 17 years of my career, I held positions with three multinational advertising agencies where I worked on large global clients. I rose in the advertising industry to handle positions in both Creative and Account Planning.
In the next 6 years, I achieved success and international acclaim as an entrepreneur. I became the Founder and CEO of my own avant-garde digital content and brand experience innovations company. World-leading industry giants and financial entities invested in us. I had nearly 150 employees of high caliber.
In the last 15 years or so, I have been an independent solopreneur – a digital marketing specialist/consultant for mid-to-large sized corporates and disruptive entrepreneurial clients in the US, UK, and India.
Even though consulting is technically a lone profession, I can’t quite say it was a solopreneur life. I had to help direct large client teams and often spend a lot of time being part of their organizations. Even with video-calling, it still had the feel of going somewhere else to work, doing what others wanted me to in their time, and being focused on the money to know where to spend my time. There was always a feeling of my leg wearing a ball and chain.
About a year ago, I came across some life-changing advice that made me give up one-to-one consulting and start this site …
The piece of advice that changed me
One memorable day, a year ago, I re-read Tim Ferriss’ phenomenal book “The 4-Hour Work Week”. I had read it many time earlier, and knew that it was all about the laptop lifestyle – escape the 9-5, live anywhere, earn passive income, join the new rich … I expected to refresh my mind about all this again. But I was surprised by a small passage that I had missed before – that transformed me.
“$1,000,000 in the bank isn’t the fantasy. The fantasy is the lifestyle of complete freedom it allows.
The question is then, How can one achieve the millionaire lifestyle of complete freedom without first having $1,000,000?”
For some reason the lines kept rolling in my head, especially the one about living the millionaire lifestyle without first having $1,000,000. It was a validating moment for me, because somewhere inside me the same thought had been growing, I guess, but had not found articulation.
As soon as I read those words, I knew that I would no longer be valuing money over life. “Money is good,” I said to myself, “but life is more precious. I can spend away life chasing money. Or I can love life and let the money find me.”
Ever since then, I gave up consulting as I knew it … and started this website instead as a solopreneur.
The values I want to share through this site
This site kindles my mojo, letting me do my work in quietude, and enjoying the workings of my heart and brain in harmony. For those of you who are solopreneurs, you must already know this feeling. When you’re working alone, you’re often “in the zone” where time melts, and you’re in a kind of free-flowing place of self-expression.
My greatest joy nowadays comes from helping other solopreneurs via this site. My aim is to let solopreneurs get excellent knowledge – and especially smart hacks – from this site, and never feel like they’re stumbling along on their own. I also want to be there personally for my solopreneur readers and subscribers, to support them with all my 40+ years of digital marketing experience.
There’s another good reason behind this site too. A solopreneur business is great for the most part. But there are times when you suddenly surface and look around – to hear crickets.
Humans are humans after all, and we all occasionally need the company of good friends, someone to brainstorm with, someone who’ll listen to our stories or regale us with their own. Most of all, it inspires us no end when someone else has a big win – and if we’ve been slowing at work, we start feeling the itch to get moving at speed again.
That’s why I built this site as a place where solopreneurs can find whatever they need to succeed … resources, knowledge, and a supportive community.
